Mariane Fahlman, an Adrian Dominican Sister and Professor of Kinesiology at Wayne State University recently teamed up with a fellow faculty member, Dr. Jeanne Barcelona, to assess the functional physical fitness, and the brain prayer and cognitive capacities of the sisters living at the Adrian Dominican Mother House Dominican Sisters of Adrian Community.
The research study started in 2017 is called, “The SIENA Study”, (Sisters In Exercise and Neuro Activity). and while the it is still ongoing, Sr. Fahlman has already shared one important piece of data very interesting finding from the ongoing research: “They [The Dominican Sisters] speak very highly of the PT department, but the most important piece of data for me was that one of the researchers asked if we got a new PT department because she has seen such improvement in the Sisters over time.” This is a positive finding as 3 Dimensional Physical Therapy had only begun treating the Sisters at the Dominican Life Center in November of 2017.
The 3D PT team is thrilled that the data from the research supports the Applied Functional Science (AFS) approach that is being used across all of 3D PT’s treatment plans clinics. The next step 3D PT will take to support The SIENA Study’s research findings will include collaborating with Sr. Fahlman and Dr. Jeanne Barcelona to determine the ideal fitness programs to increase memory function in the Sisters, as well as exploring additional research opportunities in the future.
